Archery went pretty well despite having to end early because of potential thunderstorms.

I had fun virtually attending VidUKon, despite my internet connection being a bit uncooperative (I'm planning to catch up on some of the vidshows I missed because of timezone stuff later this week). I particularly enjoyed the What Hands Were Made For femslash vidshow (also, I was delighted to be described as 'like the patron saint of the vidshow' since I tend to make a bunch of femslash fanvids with a focus on hands).

Now that Cage of Shadows has finished airing for subscribers, I'm in the early stages of brainstorming vidsongs for it.

I'm now caught up on making subtitles for the vids I've finished this year so far! (I'm planning to eventually make more for my pre-2021 fanvids)

I haven't managed to get a photo of either, but I saw hummingbirds this weekend and a fawn this afternoon.

I'm still alive. Somehow, despite everything, I'm alive.

I did not, could not, conceive of having a future. At most there were only weeks or months ahead that I could conceptualize as being real. So I just sort of sleepwalked through my life, waiting for the end.

Eventually, when my material circumstances improved and when I was finally freed from the hormonal roller coaster of menstruation, I woke up.

I had never done anything because there was no point, because I was going to die. Any day now. But I'm still alive. And the time passed anyway.

So I'm gonna give it a shot, living intentionally. Making long-term goals. Trying to exist in more than just this moment and the next. We'll see how it goes.

Whoops, fell off posting.

In sad news, Anthony Head has died at age 72. RIP to this legend, may his memory be a blessing. I wonder what of his many roles he'll be remembered most for. Uther Pendragon, Rupert Giles, or his Ted Lasso, or one of his many Doctor Who roles or something else?

For those whole liked the 45 in 45 sorting game (that I posted about a bit back) it has inspired an adjustable version where you can choose to play a 10x10, 15x15 or 20x20 version. And what's neat is they're not static games! "In this version, there are 150+ total categories, a subset of which will be randomly selected upon generating a puzzle. Most of the categories have more than 20 items (and some categories, many more!), so even if you get the same category across multiple games, you are likely to encounter new items." So you can replay several times and it will be different each time (or at least somewhat different, certain topics do seem to pop up frequently, it's very enamored with Shakespeare's plays for example from what I've seen).

I've been nearly constantly sick and/or overwhelemed for the last two weeks, but I did read some things!

The Cartoonists Club by Raina Telgemeier, Scott McCloud, et al.— A story about a group of kids forming a cartoonists club and making comics that’s also an intro to basic comics making and concepts. I’ve been wanting to read a bit more comics theory. (I’ve read Understanding Comics, but that was a while ago) Anyways this was cute and fun, but didn’t really scratch my comics theory itch. Would probably be good to give to a kid who is interested in comics though.

Supergirl's Family Vacation written by Brandon T. Snider, art by Sarah Leuver— This is so charming! It’s one of those graphic novels that’s its own little continuity – Supergirl is 13 and lives with her cousin Superman and his family and feels overlooked as a superhero. Anyway she convinces them all to go on vacation and then adventure happens! They go on a space road trip! Natasha Irons is there (she’s Supergirl’s best friend) Lois gets to be awesome but doesn’t steal the scene. There's a short scene of Batman and Wonder Woman getting instructions to take care of the stuff while they are away!

The whole thing is just very warm. I love the manga influenced art, the expressions are great, the colors are great! At one point there are magical girl-esqe transformation scenes. It’s very cute and sweet!

Batman & Robin Eternal by James Tynion IV et al— This did a much better job than Batman Eternal at being a story about legacy, and was just more cohesive in general. Only being half as long probably helped some. I read this when I was sick and bit out of it so I feel like some bits of it went over my head.

Laid-Back Camp Vol. 15-17 by Afro— While I’m on my slice-of-life manga kick I thought it would be nice to get caught up with this series.. It’s still one of my favorites of the genre, it's got food, female friendship, and great landscapes. It does make me sad that I am too disabled to go camping though.

Lightfall books 2-4 by Tim Probert— I was going to read these a bit slower, but they were due at the library so I had to hurry up a bit. This series is really good! I love the art, it's evocative, plus there are great landscapes! Also I didn’t say last time but there is a very good cat! The story went in some unexpected directions and I want to know what happens next! Too bad it's going to be a while before the next book is out.

A new season of my beloved wacky Chinese reality show The Truth has started airing and I'm excited for it! It's been a while since I watched anything.

I'm really enjoying Cage of Shadows! I suspect I will be vidding it at some point (I'm delighted that the episode subtitles aren't hardcoded on the international website).

I've found three of the apparently four songs (going by the credits) on the soundtrack on YouTube:

I'm so curious about the lyrics - while the English subtitles on iQIYI seem to be human translated (yay!), the credit songs aren't included.

I also started watching a bit of Love Beyond Dreams, which is more exciting than the poster indicated (although I do find the color contact lenses Lene seems to be wearing a bit distracting).

Posted about the aikido seminar yesterday during the period of time DW was having trouble actually posting posts, so idk when that got out of the cache relative to when people check in on their DW feeds.

It's also getting warm again after the weekend that was weirdly chilly/rainy for the end of May, but hey that went well with "do physical activity in a space without AC for most of the weekend".

Apparently it has been a full year since [personal profile] hafnia and I started our origfic series which wasn't supposed to get this long or complex or include a second generation of story ideas about their kids. xD (The ones up there are shorts, but we do have novel-length thoughts about them all too...)

Summer plans continue apace. Apparently my twin is going to be in the area around our birthday? Which is cool, especially since my mother informs me that he did not realise it was going to be so close to our birthday when he first made the plans (with other friends of his who happen to be relatively nearby), but hey once he knew he was all "okay, I think I can extend my stay until our birthday so we can celebrate together". So! That'll be neat, should be a good time.

I took my nidan test yesterday. (And passed, of course; these are tests that do not happen unless you're ready.)

Everyone who watched it says that it was a wonderful test and I looked fantastic and all my aikido shone through. All my sensei complimented me, all my friends were delighted, and it was an excellent ending to a full day of seminar practice.

Also I do not remember eighty percent of what I did because all I was doing was moving and breathing. This is the core of the art, really; connect to the person you're practicing with, move, and breathe. So long as you keep that connection, know where your center and your partner's center are, and keep moving, you'll find something to do.

One of my friends informs me that I thwacked her hard against the ground (she's fine, it's just funny). I have no memory of this. I told her that "I only remember the bits I had to think about" and she was like "yeah that was definitely a bit where you were just doing, not thinking."

More description of the weekend as a whole:

cut for length )

Very good weekend. Got to see a lot of friends and have a lot of fun, and also it was cooler than usual for this time of year and thus perfect seminar weather! We were not melting and sweating horribly much, just a reasonable amount for the amount of physical activity we were doing!

Sherlockian news

trobadora: (Sherlock/Moriarty - in the darkness)
[personal profile] trobadora
Via [community profile] tv_talk, two interesting new Sherlock Holmes-related shows in the making:
  • Moriarty: "When a rival criminal begins an assault on his underground empire, Moriarty will have only one choice: to join the police as a consultant, using the law as a weapon to dismantle his foe while keeping his true identity hidden from the police." (source)

  • The Death of Sherlock Holmes: "a six-part series starring Rafe Spall as an amnesiac Holmes forced to deduce his own identity high in the Swiss Alps" (source)

No matter how many there are, I can never get enough of Sherlock Holmes adaptations! I've read and watched a lot of them, and there are so many more I still want to try, but every time I see something new announced I'm still all, YAY! *g*

(No, seriously, I love the sheer variety of different things inspired by ACD's Holmes, no matter how close or how tenuously connected. Inspiration! Fannishness! It's all brilliant. :D)
