aurumcalendulaI finally got a chance to catch up on To Embers We Return and Dragon Subjugation Incantation's most recently translated chapters! I'm really enjoying both of them and am looking foward to seeing how how their plots and romances continue to develop!
I'm a bit annoyed there hasn't (afaik) been any announcements yet from Seven Seas re: baihe licenses. I'm hoping Rosmei does a decent job with their two (they released inital volumes of The Creator's Grace and At the World's Mercy recently, but my order from Yiggybean won't arrive until sometime in May).
Last night I managed to get a full timeline for my ClaireBell fanvid draft! I'm not sure if it lives up to the song I chose, but I'm really happy with sections of it.

Apr. 6th, 2026 09:52 pmaurumcalendulaAttempt #2 w/r/t volume 1 of the StudioWorks Wiseguy DVDs has gotten me a more functional DVD set, but not in a way that's useful to me (the disc with episode No One Gets Out of Here Alive loads in an older DVD player, but that episode will not play (the episode before it is very glitchy, the one after it plays fine)).
I've contacted the seller and included photos of what appears to be damage to the disc, so hopefully I'll end up with a refund or replacement.

I wasn't there for the dying process, so I'm not sure it it involved dying them in stages, or if was more similar to marbleizing paper (with different dyes floating on the surface of water/oil).

Apr. 2nd, 2026 07:00 pmshadarastoday I have been a lump due to WEATHER but since I haven't gotten to responding to comments on my last post about work bullshit, have an update re: work bullshit!
Tuesday they say "hey, we're going on short weeks!" and are like "I guess you can take a layoff if you don't wanna do that" and people are mostly just like "UH!!!"
Wednesday I am informed that I'll be going with one of the journeymen to another job starting probably next Wednesday. (Also one of the journeymen is like "yeah, I called [company I worked for before this] and they said they'd take me back") (Also we learn that a select few people would be staying on full weeks anyway!)
Today we are all informed, not even by the bosses, that they will not be doing short weeks after all. So. You know. Super cool of them, definitely didn't shoot themselves in the feet re crew morale and general good-will.
It's all very, "you're doing a shit job of communicating and are gonna lose people because of this", because I don't think the journeyman I'll be going to that job with wants to come back. I don't blame him; we're at the stage of the job where a lot of the work is "figure out what got missed/didn't happen because we didn't have the necessary pieces at the time", which means a lot of working around shit that's now in our way, etc etc. Plus this whole debacle about work hours.

It looks so wrong to not see the little 'beta' there after site header in superscript on the top left corner. (I do wonder if the timing was done on purpose, considering April's Fools "omega" joke where they changed it to say omega instead of beta there so when they removed the omega they just didn't have to replace it with anything.) Reading the article, I also realize I was mistaken, I'd always thought I'd gotten my account the day it went to open beta but it turns out it was the day after.
Kind of hilarious they put out a badge for it:
In news the second - all of Farscape is legally on youtube!! (here's the playlist)
In news the third - useful links update has been completed!! All links checked and either work or mention that they do not and a backup is provided if possible (I leave up links to sites that appear to just be having hiccups rather than being closed down to check randomly later on and will remove if it turns out they're down for good, but since I've had ones that were down when I started checking but up by the time I finished I try not to delete them unless I'm sure it's gone and anyway, it's only a dozen overall.) I am always amazed at how many links *do* die between checks, even in the 6 months since I did it last this time, and how alternate/backup links had to be chased down or resources removed. As always, if anyone finds a freshly dead link (or has a great resource for me to include) please let me know!
Between the twelve posts there are just shy of 2.5k links. Slightly over 250 of those are wayback machine links. Thank you internet archive, you are a wonder.

What I’m doing Wednesday

Crossing fingers and toes that I keep out of early spring cold season. So far, so good. I haven’t taken off my winter gear yet even if it’s very tempting to do so. It’s still 3 C outside. The little voice inside my head is saying… above 0 C, the temperature is above 0 C. In French we say : En Avril ne te découvre pas d’un fil mais en mai…. Fais ce que tu veux.
Teaching stuff
The Book club conference went really well on Monday, the students were happy, the lecturer was great. Things came out nice. My content for next week is off to my beta reader. Only two weeks left. The next class is on reading challenges and I wrote about that last year on my blog. Half of the content is already done. I might decide to write it this week-end.
Reading
I am doing a read along on Discord in a French Book club Jeannot book club. We are reading Katabasis by R. F. Kuang. So far and I have only 6% read it’s okay.
I’m also half way through book 2 of Sara Lövestam series. Ça ne coüte rien de demander It’s quite good. Short chapters, ambiguous characters.
I got a bunch of new books this week. One of them is Geomagician by Jennifer Mandula. An Fantasy AU of Mary Anning’s life. I loved Tracy Chevalier’s Remarkable Creatures so when I read about Geomagician at Bookriot, I ordered it.
Watching
I’m slowly making my way through Pursuit of Jade 13/40 Zhang Ling He is quite a sight. I am looking forward to Rebirth coming next week with Li Yun Rui (Song Mo from Blossom) although I have not seen any of the Princess Agent previous dramas.
Hockey
My penguins came out of March alive. Thanks to Erik Karlsson, EK65 took the team on his back (both Sid and Geno were out multiple games) and took charge. I wasn’t surprise, he was the Senator’s captain after all. Now, Sid and Geno are both back and we are, crossing fingers, making the playoffs.

My red fox is coming along the blue and black winter forest is almost done. Only the rest of the tail after that.

I read all of Witch Hat Atelier (up through ch94, for future!me's reference if I ever think to check), which means I have more than hit the point where it's like "oh! there's the part where this story is about trauma metaphors!". But also all the bits that make me cry are the bits about the kids talking about how much they've learned from their friends and how they can stay true to themselves and their dreams and how magic is for bringing joy and life to the world, so. The part of the Angsty White-Haired Man's life that's about him going "teaching is the most rewarding thing I ever could've done" is the part that interests me, not the "oh THAT'S how we're making visible the childhood trauma that defines you" part, y'know?

The weather is SO WEIRD this week? It's in the high 60s F every day EXCEPT Thursday, where it drops back down to MAYBE 40F at the highest, which is lower than the lows the rest of the week. It is also closer to NORMAL NEW ENGLAND EARLY SPRING than the high 60s F.
Today, at least, I have not had any headache from pressure changes! Which is nice, since yesterday I was grumbly about it and I have ever expectation that I'll be like "ughhhh" about it the rest of the week.

Work is doing Bullshit, but when they tell us only the broad strokes of their plans for Bullshit and it mostly makes everyone go WTF, I will await further specifications about how exactly it'll manifest. (They want to go to short weeks. This is... them playing a game with what they're contracted for and how many hours they have available. I am very curious how many people are going to go "fine, lay me off then" instead.)

I think it's very funny that I'm like "right, I should post, say hi, etc" on Trans Day of Visibility, a day that I keep forgetting that it is.

[Rhei stands] next to Mouse, gazing at the city they’re moving away from. Its buildings are beautiful, it rises gracefully from the water, and it stands so proudly against the sky. Many of the rich and powerful of the city might have made ugly choices, and continue to make them, but the majority of its people are just that: people, doing their best in less than ideal circumstances.
And they look at Mouse, who made the bravest choice they could make, and who doesn’t seem to quite realise the enormity of what they have chosen and how rare it is to be able to do.
It is nothing like anything Rhei has ever done, a kind of choice Rhei doesn’t think they’ll ever need to make, and Mouse was willing to sacrifice their whole life for not a promise but a chance at something better.
Rhei can’t help but admire that.
