Jing Beiyuan wakes from a dream in which he passes through a forest populated by gnarled fruit trees, a stinking mass of unharvested fruits beneath them. Wasps and flies churn over the rot, wafting a pungent odor to Jing Beiyuan’s nose. Leaves whisper in the forest, and the carriage driver nervously reveals he heard rumors about the restless dead along that road.
