I'm really excited about rewatching WoH properly! I've gone back to bits and pieces for fic-writing purposes, but a full rewatch seems like it's gonna bring so much more out of the show and its story. :) I'd love to hear about all the layers and nuance you've seen once we get that rewatch started!

Ahhhh Zhang Chengling's understated competence, where he's young and smiles and people don't expect him to be as good as he is... <3

I must admit, it was an, ahem, selective rewatch. Even though I have a completely irrational fondness for almost all the characters.

Zhang Chengling being secretly competent, and no one knowing because he'd never applied himself--not because of laziness per say, but because laziness + he thought his duty would be something else--is really a lot.

Ahhhh yes, a very important kind of rewatch. :)

Yeah! I don't think he's lazy, even—when he's given expectations and a reason to apply himself, he does so admirably. I just don't think his family gave him any of that, because he was the doted-upon youngest son. :)

He applied himself vigorously to the expectations even before: he was, or thought he was, expected to accompany his parents. And he very much applied himself to it! It makes me a little sad thinking of how he must have been with his parents: very much a little gremlin.

Also: I just realized that you once wrote me a lovely NiF Jingyan/Nihuang fic, and will always appreciate that impeccable taste.

Very true! :) His family life must've been so interesting... I hope people write fic exploring what it was like before the ghosts' attack.

Welcome aboard! Yes, it's such a wonderful dynamic, and such a wonderful character arc for both of them.

So, so true about Chengling, too - how he manages to be simultaneously so earnest and so devious, I have no idea, but I love it.
