TYK readalong survey and a Qi Ye/TKY age overview

I'd floated the idea privately before and wanted to see if there was an audience here for it.

Would anyone be interested in a Tian Ya Ke readalong? I wouldn't be quite book club but not far off either.

So this post is to gauge interest and if there's enough of it to get an idea of modalities you might favour.

The novel has 77 chapters of varying lengths and 4 short extras. It has been completely translated (see this carrd page for details) so there wouldn't be any waiting for new chapters. I plan to go relatively slow (I am both a slow reader and have a pretty busy job), so everyone who wants to and hasn't read the novel yet can read ahead as I don't plan to avoid spoilers either for the drama or the novel itself.

I'd likely put a few quotes and thoughts into the post to spark discussion.

Questions! :D
  1. Would you be interested at all?

  2. How many discussion posts a week would you prefer? (My current plan is either two short ones or one longer one.)

  3. How much volume would you prefer? (Chapters are of varying length but often short, but I'd need to settle on how many to combine.)

  4. Anything else you'd like to add/see?

Secondarily, I was very confused by some of the timeline going on in Qi Ye and Tian Ye Ke, especially where people's ages are concerned, so I broke down the age information we get for the characters throughout the novels on my DW:

Qi Ye and Tian Ye Ke timeline thoughts

Obviously, rampant spoilers for both Qi Ye and Tian Ya Ke.

As I've said, I'd be interested!

One post a week, please; I recall part of why I started falling behind with the Coldfire reread when that was happening was that I'd get multiple posts behind and lose motivation to catch up because of it...

If you do like three chapters a week then you'll finish before I finish the drama rewatch, I think? xD I don't have a strong opinion here, because my preferred method of reading tends to be binging instead of chipping slowly away, so whatever level of chunking you do will be smaller than my natural reading tendencies.

Makes sense!

I don't think the timing of the reread needs to be tied to the drama rewatch, but you're right that it'd be cool to get near-ish the end of both of them at the same time, so that people can think about and compare the canons in their entirety. :)

Heh. When it comes to reading preferences I just read the whole thing in one go if at all feasible. But for actually discussing every chapter, that's not all that useful. *g*

xD Same! It's a lovely way to spend a day/afternoon, but it does tend to make it difficult for me to pin down what happened when for specific chapter discussions...

I'm definitely interested! I can't keep up with more than a post a week, though - I didn't manage it with the Coldfire reread either, and that was all stuff we had discussed extensively before, so, not as much new stuff to think about. One to two chapters per post would be great for me.

Great, looking forward to it! Also, come to think of it, it would probably help if it wasn't posted on Friday/Saturday/Sunday, so it wouldn't overlap too much with the rewatch discussion?

Probably won't be actually re-reading since I've only just finished it recently, but I'd be happy to hang around and chat about it anyway.

Sounds good! I'll keep an eye out.
