Recap

The whole group of protagonists walks through town together! They decide to get a meal, and a beggar by the inn’s door asks for some coins, which CWN gives to him. ZZS teases GX about liking CWN, a fool. CWN begs ZZS not to tease GX after GX drags WKX inside, and Chengling and ZZS both wish CWN luck in his pursuit of GX.
Inside, as they wait for their food, WKX and GX call each other’s travelling companions idiots. They’re siblings like that. ZZS asks if CWN’s recovered from his injury (CWN tells ZZS to call him “Weining” instead of “Cao-gongzi”), and CWN says he’s still got a bit of residual poison in his body (but that GX has been taking very good care of him) but he’s planning on cleansing that at Mount Qingfeng (with his sect).
WKX asks how he didn’t know that GX could take such good care of people. He doesn’t get a response. WKX then asks for CWN’s hands, and ZZS explains that WKX’s good at medicine and can help him. (This is also evidence that WKX likes CWN more than he’s letting on.) While WKX’s feeling CWN’s pulse, ZZS asks how CWN and GX got in a fight with Lv Liu and Tao Hong anyway. GX explains about Xiaolian’s kidnapping.

This seems to be the first ZZS, Chengling, and WKX have heard of this! Chengling asks if Shen Shen and Zhao Jing have sent people looking for Xiaolian, and gets only silence as a response. ZZS assures him that Xiaolian will be safe until they [presumably Lv Liu and Tao Hong] get the glazed armor. This isn’t very reassuring to Chengling. GX teases Chengling about his engagement to Xiaolian, and says that since Deng Kuan is gone there isn’t anyone to get in their way. In this case, “gone” means “disappeared”, as GX clarifies at ZZS’s questioning.
WKX says that it’ll take a bit of work to clear the residual poison in CWN, and tells ZZS to come with him to an herbal medicine shop. CWN tries to protest this, but GX holds him in place as WKX and ZZS stand up and walk out. Chengling assures CWN that he’ll eventually learn how to interact with WKX and ZZS.
ZZS and WXK have gone off to talk about what they’ve learned more than to get the medicine. They hadn’t realised how important Deng Kuan was—ZZS says he’d inherit Gao Chong’s wealth and position eventually, if he married Xiaolian—and so the person using him must have known this. WKX plays devil’s advocate about wondering if Deng Kuan was telling the truth, but ZZS believes in Gao Chong’s general righteousness and attitude and doesn’t think he’d make a promise he didn’t mean.
Another beggar appears, asking for money and dramatically collapsing. WKX mocks the beggar and leaves him behind. As they start walking, Shen Shen arrives! He and WKX stare at each other with Dramatic Music. WKX is Not Happy about seeing him. ZZS comes to stand between WKX and Shen Shen.

This stalemate is broken when Shen Shen sees someone jump at WKX and ZZS from behind and calls out a warning. WKX reflects the beggar’s knife right back into him with a wave of his fan, but a lot more appear with a flurry of thrown knives, and we’re left with a shot of WKX, ZZS, and Shen Shen all preparing to fight them.

Meanwhile, at the inn, CWN gives GX snacks to eat. Chengling asks GX if she’s planning to stay with CWN at Mount Qingfeng, says he’s going to Siji Manor with ZZS and WKX, and ends by accidentally offending GX because he asked her where her hometown is. GX tells him he has no right to ask, then demands he answer her questions about what they were up to instead. Chengling takes this with a smile, despite how rude GX is being.

Before he can explain, a waiter comes over with food, but GX is suspicious because they hadn’t ordered yet. She is correct to be suspicious; a cloud of steam rolls out as he opens it, and GX immediately slams it shut and kills the waiter. As the steam clears, the inn is filled with Scorpion minions, swords drawn and ready for a fight.

CWN is confused about this. GX tells him to take Chengling and run; CWN refuses to leave her alone. Before they can argue more, the Scorpions attack. It’s three vs many, which is a great way of displaying the protags’ skills. GX makes the first move, very aggressive with her daggers. CWN is fighting more defensively with his sword. Chengling, once separated from CWN, doesn’t have a weapon but does grab plates and jars from tables and throws them at the Scorpions surprisingly effectively.
Chengling may look ridiculous, but we’re shown just how much his training has taught him how to dodge. CWN and GX, meanwhile, are both very good at killing people!

Outside, we are not shown WKX, ZZS, and Shen Shen killing their own mob of attackers. We’re just shown the aftermath.

WKX is grouchy about Shen Shen’s help. Shen Shen pulls a Scorpion knife (“Scorpion Tail Thorn”) out of his arm, and ZZS tells him that it’s been poisoned. ZZS offers Shen Shen a medicine and says to “take it orally and apply it externally”. Shen Shen takes it, and does as instructed.
Shen Shen finally talks, to thank them for their help saving Chengling and also for the medicine now, and says he’ll repay these favors someday. (Is that repayment what WKX leans on to get him to help out with the fake death, later? That’s a really sad way to repay them!) WKX remarks that he’s surprised Shen Shen remembers Gao Chong, and ZZS scolds him for being rude. Shen Shen asks after Chengling, and ZZS says he’s around nearby and says he might be in danger from the Scorpions too.

As they return to the inn, they find a lot of people screaming and shouting, clear evidence of a fight. CWN knocks a Scorpion out of the inn and rides him down to the ground very dramatically, making it clear just how good he is at fighting. (Also, if CWN is still a bit poisoned right now, he’s probably not even fighting at his best.) But CWN’s still a nice person, since he doesn’t kill the beggar at the inn’s door. GX, who just led Chengling out of the inn, does.

More Scorpions chase them and the three run. We’re given a shot of a knife in the beggar’s sleeve, evidence that GX was correct to believe he was going to try stabbing Chengling.
All our protags meet up in the streets. WKX runs to face the assassins and kills a whole group with a toss of his fan. ZZS tries to ask him to leave one alive, but it’s too late, they’re already dead.
WKX asks GX about the blood on her, and she shrugs and tells him it’s not hers; he smiles and taps her on the head with his fan. It’s very cute.

Shen Shen, meanwhile, asks how Chengling’s been (and why CWN is here) and just gets told “it’s a long story”.
The scene cuts from there to a little house in the woods. In the courtyard, CWN draws water from the well and GX cleans blood off her hands. He goes to wipe some blood off her neck, but GX bats his hand away; she’s upset at CWN for no reason he can understand.
After a moment, GX asks him if she was right to kill the beggar, since he would’ve killed her if she hadn’t. CWN doesn’t think he would’ve. GX shakes her head at him and explains that she grew up in a place where people always killed each other, so she needs to assume everyone might be a threat and kill before she dies. CWN says he doesn’t blame her, and that he doesn’t think she was wrong; he just worries she’d feel bad if the beggar were an ordinary person.

GX says she wouldn’t feel bad, but in a way that makes it feel like she might. CWN says she would feel bad, because she’s so kind. Then, when GX questions that, CWN says he knows her well, and wonders why her childhood was so harsh. GX jumps up, tells him he knows nothing, and runs away because she has too many emotions.

Inside, Chengling and Shen Shen talk. Shen Shen says he hasn’t treated Chengling well, and asks if Chengling is angry at him. Chengling says he isn’t, but Shen Shen keeps apologising anyway. Shen Shen says that he has a lot of feelings because he got to act as an uncle to Chengling’s older brothers, because that was before ZYS retreated, but he hasn’t had the same chances with Chengling. He also wishes Chengling’s brothers were alive, which Chengling agrees with (calling himself the most useless son in the process).
Shen Shen tells Chengling to sit down, then tells him he’s very similar to his father. He also calls ZYS the kindest and most honest of the five lakes brothers. Chengling doesn’t seem to have heard anyone talk about his dad this way before, and doesn’t seem to believe he’s like his dad. Mostly, he thinks he’s weak and his dad wasn’t.
ZZS enters, interrupting this conversation. Shen Shen asks when Chengling started studying with ZZS, then thanks ZZS again for everything he’s done for Chengling. ZZS says he doesn’t need thanks, just for Shen Shen to answer a few questions honestly. Shen Shen says that of course he will, and ZZS tells Chengling to ask first.

Chengling tells Shen Shen he doesn’t need to answer the question, but he can’t lie. Chengling asks about the misunderstanding ZYS and the other brothers had, and if Deng Kuan’s story of Gao Chong allying with Ghost Valley to kill ZYS is true. Shen Shen immediately says that Gao Chong would rather kill himself than kill ZYS, especially since Gao Chong loved ZYS the most. Shen Shen adds that Gao Chong wanted Chengling to marry Xiaolian, revive the Mirror Lake, and eventually become the leader of the Five Lakes Alliance. Chengling says he doesn’t want those.

ZZS interrupts to ask if Shen Shen knew Deng Kuan. When Shen Shen says he’s known Deng Kuan since his youth, Chengling asks if Deng Kuan’s accusations against Gao Chong are true. Shen Shen denies those accusations, and (after being asked why) explains that, twenty years ago, Gao Chong suggested either destroying the glazed armor or exposing what they did to the public and accepting the repercussions of their actions. Nobody else agreed, so that didn’t happen. Shen Shen also says that he, LTC, and ZYS would’ve given their glazed armor to Gao Chong if he’d ever asked for it. He says Zhao Jing is weak, and doesn’t follow up on that.
ZZS asks about the rhyme and who spread it. Shen Shen says it wasn’t Gao Chong’s doing, because Gao Chong values brotherhood more than anything else. ZZS then asks why Deng Kuan framed Gao Chong. Shen Shen thinks it’s weird, since Deng Kuan normally would’ve given his life for Gao Chong rather than hurt him. But Shen Shen doesn’t know what bewitched him like that.
ZZS is about to leave and find WKX when Shen Shen stops him and says he thinks WKX looks like an old friend. Shen Shen asks if WKX’s surname is Zhen. While ZZS doesn’t respond, Chengling gasps and fumbles at the tea set, which is all the answer Shen Shen needs. ZZS tells Shen Shen he’s not answering that question, says Shen Shen should rest, and then leaves him and Chengling alone.

Out on a nice pier extending into the lake, ZZS stars into the distance. WKX sneaks up behind him, then startles him with a sound right by his ear. ZZS slaps at him, and WKX laughs.

After ZZS says not to scare him, WKX asks what ZZS’s thinking about. ZZS tells him that he’s found another explanation for Deng Kuan’s behavior: the “legendary soul-hunting poison” (传说中的摄魂蛊), which is akin to how the drug men are controlled.
WKX thinks about this, and how the Scorpion and his men are entangled with the drug men, and then asks if ZZS (as the once-leader of Tianchuang) has ever seen the leader of the Scorpion. ZZS says he hasn’t. WKX says Shen Shen isn’t lying, and so he thinks Zhao Jing is the real leader. ZZS isn’t as certain, and says there are still two tricks left to figure out.

First, if Zhao Jing is the leader of the Scorpion, then he’s the one who poisoned Gao Chong’s sword back then. Second, ZZS asks who Long-Tongued Ghost is. When WKX doesn’t answer, ZZS asks if it’s the person at the coffin home, since ZZS’s only certain that Long-Tongued Ghost is one of the ten devils. WKX quickly agrees, and says Long-Tongued Ghost was one of Hanged Ghost’s men, and Hanged Ghost gave him the soul-winding box after Hanged Ghost’s martial arts advanced.
ZZS smiles, calls WKX well-informed, and then walks off. WKX watches him go, looking uncertain about what ZZS knows.

Back at the house, GX and CWN fill a bathtub with steaming water for WKX. GX tells CWN she can take care of WKX herself, and then they both leave after letting WKX know the bath’s ready. We now get a delightfully gratuitous shirtless scene as WKX takes a bath.

WKX thinks about how he almost gave away his secret and revealed how long he and Long-Tongued Ghost have known each other. He doesn’t think ZZS noticed, and is glad of that because “humans and ghosts are destined to go different ways”.
That brief scene ends, and we cut to Yueyang at night, where Xie’er is reporting to Zhao Jing. He has good news (his spies found everyone at Longyuan Pavillion) and bad news (Long Que and Long Xiao are dead). Zhao Jing thinks the Long family’s death is also a good thing. Xie’er’s worried that this means they can’t find the key to the Armory, but Zhao Jing says that the Armory’s key has been kept in the most dangerous (and safest) place. Xie’er correctly figures out that it’s in Ghost Valley, and Zhao Jing says this is why he’s wanted to wipe out Ghost Valley.

Zhao Jing monologues about how all the things he’s schemed (destroying Mirror Lake Sect, having his glazed armor stolen from Sanbai Manor, killing Ao Laizi) were to stir up resentment against Ghost Valley. Xie’er points out that the fake glazed armor almost ruined his plans, though they still managed to frame Gao Chong. Then Xie’er asks why Zhao Jing hates Gao Chong so much.
Zhao Jing wonders why he’s being asked, and Xie’er glances down and says he’s just curious. (The music turns dark and ominous as this happens.) Zhao Jing then starts ranting. He believes that some of his brothers (implied: Gao Chong) were powerful and domineering leaders, and he was an underprivileged and undignified minion/following, and that sworn brothers should all be of equal status and so this was absolutely terrible.
He ends this by asking if he’s “such a selfish person that [he] killed Gao Chong just for personal gain” and declaring that only he can make the Five Lakes Alliance into a force that dominates the jianghu.

Xie-wang watches this, silent, until Zhao Jing finally stops and sits. Then he apologises for asking about this, and accepts Zhao Jing’s next blustering yell.
Zhao Jing gets himself under control and asks about Chengling and what Xie-wang did after finding him. Xie-wang explains that his spies have been following ZZS, WKX, and Chengling, and are waiting for a good chance to strike. Zhao Jing says that common minions will do nothing against ZZS and WKX’s skills (true). Xie-wang kneels and offers to go after them himself. Zhao Jing doesn’t exactly respond to this (except to say that they escaped from Xie-wang last time), but does say he has a plan.
Xie’er puts his hand on Zhao Jing’s, and Zhao Jing removes it before telling Xie’er to be less impulsive and reckless and grow up faster.

Back at the nice house in the woods, ZZS stands in a courtyard silently. He startles GX, who comes out of the house carrying a tray with drinks, and who scolds him for being out here at midnight. ZZS turns it back around and asks if she should go to bed, and then sits at the table and takes the wine she’d brought out. GX doesn’t complain about this, just joins him at the table and grumbles that he’s quoting poetry to ask why she’s out here at night.

GX also complains about the taste of the wine, and ZZS tells her not to waste good wine if she doesn’t like to drink. (Though, like, how much can he taste right now anyway?) GX gulps down her cup of wine, then spits it out while ZZS continues drinking from the jar. GX complains about how wine helps WKX, but isn’t helping her. ZZS tells her she needs to try drinking more, and then asks if CWN annoyed her again.
GX denies it, in a way that makes it clear that’s probably true, and ZZS wonders why she’s so good at swearing. After a moment, he decides it’s because WKX raised her. GX tries to retaliate by asking “Sick Dude” if he’s sick again, which ZZS easily agrees is true. This takes the wind out of GX’s sails immediately, and she instead says WKX’s told her that he’ll die soon. ZZS startles her by leaning towards her making ghost noises, and she’s mad at him about that, too, before asking why he can’t just stay healthy. (A question everyone with chronic conditions loves to be asked. :P)

GX also tells ZZS that WKX would be sad if he died, that she’s never seen WKX so sad as “that day” (after he learned that ZZS was dying), and that he’s WKX’s first friend so he has to live. ZZS scolds her for her way of talking, and says her way of talking reminds him of an eavesdropper.
WKX steps out of the shadows where he’s been lurking and asks GX about the nonsense she’s been saying. GX steals the wine jar from ZZS and tries to hand it to WKX, who grabs her ear instead and tells her (through her complaints) that he’ll keep doing this even if she marries and has children. ZZS’s amused by this family scene. WKX takes the jar, shakes it, and complains that it’s empty. He sends GX off to look for more wine.

Once GX leaves, Shen Shen arrives from inside the house, Chengling following as an apologetic shadow. He and WKX stare at each other, and after a moment WKX scolds Chengling for telling him (about WKX’s identity). Chengling protests that he didn’t; he just refused to answer a question and Shen Shen guessed.
ZZS tells WKX to calm down. This at least makes WKX turn away from Shen Shen, though Shen Shen ruins this by immediately walking down the steps and in front of WKX so he can see his face. Shen Shen asks WKX if he’s “Yan’er”. WKX swallows and winces. Shen Shen doesn’t notice, since he follows up by asking “Yan’er” about his parents. WKX presses a hand to his head, this show’s visual marker of a Meng Po Soup headache, and drops the jar of wine. (It splashes. Despite what he’d told GX, it wasn’t empty.)

Shen Shen shuts up, ZZS stands up, and WKX glares at Shen Shen. WKX tells Shen Shen (with increasing volume and ferocity) exactly what sort of terrible situation his parents were in, and then asks how well Shen Shen thinks they should be. Shen Shen lowers his head, kneels, and starts to cry. He apologises, but (as WKX says) it’s too late for his parents to hear the apology (and either too early or too late for WKX to listen to it).
WKX clutches at his head again, and ZZS comes over to support him. Shen Shen also looks up and worries about “Yan’er”, leading to WKX shoving him away and telling him that he’s unworthy to use that name. ZZS grabs WKX, calling him by his name and preventing him from doing anything else to Shen Shen. WKX asks why ZZS is helping Shen Shen, and ZZS says he’s helping WKX. WKX says it’s too late, and “They’re all dead, along with Zhen Yan”. He’s crying now.

Shen Shen asks how his parents died. WKX repeats “It’s too late” and we get a flashback of ghosts (including the old valley master, Xisang Gui, and Hei and Bai Wuchang) surrounding his parents’ bodies. WKX spits out blood and collapses in ZZS’s arms. ZZS tenderly blots blood off WKX’s lips, and WKX apologies as he falls unconscious.

In the morning, we learn this place is called Li Mansion, and that WKX is still unconscious in bed while everyone (except Gu Xiang! She isn’t in this scene, for some reason!) fusses over him. ZZS tells Chengling (and everyone else) that he’s okay other than being unconscious.

Shen Shen continues asks if “Yan’er” is sick. ZZS tells him “My shidi’s name is Wen Kexing. He chooses this name. Please respect this choice.” (Which is a very nice way of framing it and gives me some trans feels.) Shen Shen only focuses on the ‘shidi’ bit of this, and asks who ZZS’s shifu is. ZZS tells him, and Shen Shen is surprised that QHZ saved WKX (he says Yan’er, then swiftly corrects to Kexing), but thinks this is great. He also assumes that QHZ raised WKX, which ZZS doesn’t correct.
ZZS asks why, if the five lakes brothers were such good friends with QHZ, his shifu never spoke of them. Shen Shen says that QHZ stopped talking to them after the battle at Mount Qingya. (Because of the battle itself, or because of what Wen Ruyu and Gu Miaomiao told him about what happened during and after it?) ZZS says his master always valued friends, so there must’ve been some misunderstanding.
Shen Shen says it wasn’t a misunderstanding; QHZ hates them “for some reason” but it’s a long story. ZZS tells Shen Shen he doesn’t need to say more, which of course means Shen Shen does.

“He blamed us for crossing the bottom line in front of the big deal and being disloyal” is what youtube translates Shen Shen as saying. It’s a confusing line mostly because I can’t figure out who “the big deal” is. Netflix says “He blamed us for crossing the line for something big and for being disloyal,” which is slightly clearer. (The hanzi is: 他是怪我们在大是大非之前没有守住底线做了不忠不义之举)
But Shen Shen, looking back on it, agrees that QHZ was right to accuse them of crossing lines and being disloyal. He calls himself a coward, says he wronged his brother, and that he has no right to argue.
Chengling asks if he poisoned Gao Chong’s sword. When Shen Shen’s like WTF?, ZZS repeats the question more firmly. Shen Shen fiercely responds to Chengling, saying that he might not have said anything about Rong Xuan’s death or Wen Ruyu’s suffering, but he would never kill Gao Chong. (CWN grabs Chengling’s shoulders in support as Shen Shen says all this.) Shen Shen says he’d kill the person who poisoned Gao Chong’s sword if he could.

ZZS acts surprised Shen Shen doesn’t know who did that, and then asks who the leader of the Five Lakes Alliance is. Shen Shen names Zhao Jing, confused, and then asks who told this to ZZS. In this moment, asking if WKX told him, he goes back to saying Yan’er. Shen Shen wants evidence and explanations. ZZS says that if WKX wakes up and wants to talk to Shen Shen, he won’t stop him. But when Shen Shen runs towards WKX, saying he wants to make everything clear, ZZS stands in his way and knocks him back.

ZZS says he doesn’t expect anything good from Shen Shen, because he and his brothers are all to blame for the Wen family’s suffering. If they’d helped at all, WKX’s life wouldn’t have been so harsh. Shen Shen says they were all badly injured at Mount Qingya, as if that absolves them. ZZS doesn’t think it does. He also implies that this may have come back to haunt them in the ways they’re dying right now.

ZZS turns his back on Shen Shen, says he doesn’t want WKX to keep suffering from hatred, and tells Shen Shen to leave. He doesn’t care what Shen Shen does; he just hopes WKX doesn’t take revenge and that they never see Shen Shen again. He tells Chengling to see Shen Shen out.
Shen Shen doesn’t argue, and leaves, Chengling trailing after him. The episode ends on a shot of WKX’s unconscious face.
General Commentary
When Cao Weining’s mention of still having some lingering poison came up, I spent a while considering the implied parallel there with Zhou Zishu. It’s not quite the same, of course, since Cao Weining’s damage was entirely externally-inflicted and much easier to fix, but it’s still an echo. Especially with this being an episode where Cao Weining learns a little more of Gu Xiang’s past, while Zhou Zishu gains another clue about Wen Kexing’s. (Plus, right now, they’re both heading back to their home sects with their ghostly partners...)
After Zhou Zishu asks Wen Kexing about Long-Tongued Ghost, it feels like Zhou Zishu has enough information to be pretty certain Wen Kexing’s from Ghost Valley, even if he doesn’t know Wen Kexing’s position within Ghost Valley at this time.
Checking back in ep6: Long-Tongued Ghost’s name didn’t come up between Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishu. The person with the Soul Winding Box was referred to as “the Fake Hanging Ghost”, and even then Zhou Zishu was wondering why Wen Kexing killed him instead of capturing him. So Wen Kexing using Long-Tongued Ghost’s name when talking to Zhou Zishu in this episode really is a slip-up and gives Zhou Zishu more clues to say “Wen Kexing killed him because they have some connection”. (At that time, Zhou Zishu wasn’t comfortable pursuing the question after Wen Kexing said he was worried for Zhou Zishu; while that was certainly also true, it wasn’t the whole reason.)
I love every time Zhou Zishu and Gu Xiang interact, and this episode has so many delightful moments between them. Zhou Zishu teases her! And Gu Xiang confides in him! They’re bonding! It’s really nice to see.
This episode does a really lovely job showing just how skilled all our protagonists are in combat. Even Chengling, who has the least training, finishes the battle without a scratch on him. It’s very fun!
Shen Shen is exasperating sometimes, but also he’s such a good example of a well-meaning relative who can’t internalise important facts quickly enough. He really does care about Wen Kexing! He sounds like he wants to attempt to connect with him! Unfortunately, as Wen Kexing says, the Zhen Yan he’s thinking of is dead, and so long as Shen Shen keeps thinking of Zhen Yan he’ll never be able to meet Wen Kexing.
Discussion Prompts/Questions
1. I’m curious what y’all think of the connection/parallel I’m drawing between Cao Weining and Zhou Zishu! Does it make sense to you? Anything else to consider there?
2. Shen Shen’s guilt complex! It sure is on full display right now. We’ll be getting a bit more of him next episode, since he talks to Chengling before he leaves, but I recall this being a turning point in perception of him on a first watch. He’s more
3. What do you think Zhou Zishu knows about Wen Kexing’ss past in Ghost Valley at this point? What do you think he suspects? We’ll keep getting more, but this is when the question starts being really interesting to discuss!
Next Time: Flashback to young WKX in Ghost Valley. LFM and LQQ in Xie-wang’s holdings. WKX agrees that GX can be with CWN. Zhao Jing plots the book of ghosts.
